In the rolling hills of Pyin Oo Lwin, nestled within Myanmar's Mandalay Region, lies Green Land Coffee Plantation. Established in 1999 by U Sai Wan Maing, this sprawling plantation spans 700 acres and boasts over 600,000 Arabica coffee trees.

At Green Land, the cultivation of coffee is not just a business, it's a passion. The plantation specializes in Arabica coffee varieties, T-8667, T-5175, and Kenya SL-34. These beans thrive in the cool mountain air, reaching their full potential at 3800 feet above sea level.

In recognition of its dedication to excellence, Green Land received the Outstanding Coffee Growing Award from the FAO in 2003. Green Land believes that the key to great coffee lies in freshness, flavor, and aroma.

Oo Sigh Wan Maing

In 2017, U Sai Wan embarked on a new venture, building a wet mill for his coffee plantation. Water, however, was scarce and costly. Determined to find a solution, Sai Wan devised a clever method to rebalance the pH levels of the wastewater and repurpose it to irrigate the coffee fields, ensuring nothing went to waste.

Sai Wan is a true professional, always eager to learn and collaborate. His warm personality makes him a joy to work with. He's been instrumental in the development of smallholder coffees, and under his management, the first containers of specialty Myanmar coffee were exported to the United States.

Walking through Sai's estate is like entering a well-organized oasis. His mill is impeccably clean, reflecting his commitment to quality. Coffee plants flourish under the shade of silver oak trees, creating the perfect environment for growth.

Not content with the status quo, Sai is constantly innovating. He maintains an extensive coffee nursery and isn't afraid to experiment with different varietals, including the sought-after Geisha. With Sai's dedication and forward-thinking approach, the future of Myanmar's coffee industry looks brighter than ever.

Green Land State

Nestled between Pyin Oo Lwin and Mogok, in Thatkan Village near the border of Mandalay Division and Northern Shan State, lies Green Land estate. Acquired in 1998 and transformed into a coffee haven in 1999, this sprawling plantation sits at an altitude of 1127-1158 meters above sea level, covering 400 acres.

At Green Land Estate, Arabica coffee trees are carefully intercropped with silver oak and macadamia trees, providing essential shade. U Sai Wan Maing, the owner of Green Land, has implemented several innovative experiments on the farm. Different spacing between shade tree species, fertilization techniques, solar water pumps, and drip irrigation systems are just a few examples of Sai Wan's commitment to improvement and sustainability.

For Sai Wan, the journey into coffee farming holds a personal significance. Childhood memories of seeing coffee farms along the road near Pyin Oo Lwin left a lasting impression on him. Each time his parents took him from Yangon to visit family in Northern Shan state, Sai Wan was captivated by the lush greenery of the coffee plantations, planting the seed for his future in the industry.

Innovative Processing

Green Land produces some of the finest specialty coffees in the country, focusing on quality and consistency. They offer naturals, fully washed, and honey processed beans, always looking to implement new processing methods.
Green Land installed a PINHALENSE wet-mill with a full set of processing equipment including washer-separator, Eco-super pulper, rotary screener, and de-mucilager. Selectively harvested fully ripe cherries are processed, starting with removing floaters and skin within 20 hours after harvest. The cherries then undergo fermentation for 20-25 hours before washing and drying on concrete patios. After 7-10 days, parchment reaches 12% moisture content. Throughout processing, daily lots are segregated and stored in the farm warehouse until a buyer is found. The parchment is then sent to MCG for dry milling, final sorting, and export.
