Pyin Oo Lwin, formerly and colloquially referred to as Maymyo, is a scenic hill town situated into the cool central mountains of the country, 67km at the east from Mandalay. The town was estimated to have a population of around 255,000 inhabitants in 2014.
Pyin Oo Lwin was in Shan State and after British, the town was put into the Mandalay Region along with Mogok. The town has approximately 10,000 Indian and 8,000 Gurkha inhabitants who settled in Maymyo during the British rule.
Today, Pyin Oo Lwin has a thriving Eurasian community, consisting mostly of Anglo-Burmese and Anglo-Indians. There is also a diverse mix of Chinese, Chin, Kachin, Karen, Shan, Bamars (Burmans) and other communities.
Pyin Oo Lwin is the centre of the country's flower and vegetable production. The most important flowers grown intensively are chrysanthemum, aster and gladiolus, which are exported to every corner of Myanmar throughout the year.
Lastly, Pyin Oo Lwin is the center of Myanmar's rapidly growing coffee farms and roaster, it’s the Coffee City. Biggest and well-organized Estates had florished around POL, as well as a considerable number of coffee industries in the town process coffee beans for country-wide distribution.
Green Land workers sort and spread fully ripe cherries on raised beds within 20 hours of harvesting. The cherries are covered during the night as they darken, and after 14-20 days of drying, their moisture content drops below 12%. Once dried, the pods are stored on the farm until a buyer is secured. Subsequently, they are sent to MCG for dry milling, final sorting, and eventual export. Daily lots remain segregated throughout the entire processing until the dry milling stage.
